23 June 2022 – Leaders of the European Union formally approved Ukraine’s candidate status to join the EU.

It would appear that Ukraine has been fast tracked to European union status. Ukraine applied days after the Russian invasion in February 2022, and its application moved at a record speed.

Candidate status is the first official step towards EU membership. But it can take many years to join and there’s no guarantee of success.

10 May 2022 – Seven billion pounds worth of wheat from last year’s harvest is sitting in Ukraine storage unable to be exported because the war has blocked off access to the sea, the president of the European Investment Bank is reported as saying.

Ukraine was the world’s sixth-largest exporter of wheat last year, but Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has disrupted shipping in the Black Sea, a major route for grains and other commodities.

Ukraine was the second-largest supplier of grains (a category which includes wheat and corn) to the European Union last year. Ukraine supplied 14 percent of European Union grain.

The United Nations has already warned that the fall in exports from Ukraine could see food and feed prices worldwide rise by up to 22 percent.

Food prices have risen 66 percent in Ethiopia.

According to European Investment Bank this year’s harvest will be reduced by 30 percent due to the war in the Ukraine. However, what will be produced will be difficult or impossible to export. African countries will be particularly harmed including risk of widespread famine and global food price inflation for those who can buy.

Reuters News Agency 23rd April 2022 -Analyst APK-Inform on Saturday raised its forecasts for Ukraine’s 2022/23 grain crop and exports due to a better than expected winter harvest.

The consultancy said in a statement that Ukraine could harvest 41.4 million tonnes of grain in 2022, including almost 17 million tonnes of wheat and 18.5 million tonnes of corn.

APK-Inform said 2022/23 exports could also rise to 33.2 million tonnes versus the previous outlook of 29.9 million tonnes.

Ukraine expected to cut interest rate from 9 percent to 10 percent at the next policy meeting on April 23 to help the Ukraine through the coronavirus pandemic economic slowdown.

The coronavirus pandemic is forecast to cause a recession in the Ukraine. Forecasts say the Ukrainian economy will contract by 4.8 percent in 2020 which is actually a massive swing from 3.7 percent forecast growth.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s government has asked the International Monetary Fund IMF for an 8 billion dollar loan package which remains conditional on parliament passing a banking reform bill.

The IMF wants Ukrainian parliament to pass a law that prevents former owners of banks declared insolvent from regaining their assets.

18th February 2017 Ceasefire Between Ukraine and Russian-Backed Separatists 

A ceasefire between Ukraine and Russian backed separatists has been agreed and will come into effect on 20th February, according to Russias Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. After the ceasefire the combatants will withdraw military hardware.

10th February 2017 IMF Deal By End-February

Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman says he expects to conclude deal for financial support from the IMF by the end of February 2017. The Prime Minister is expecting £14 billion in aid from the IMF.

He also claims the increased fighting in eastern Ukraine is due to increased Russian backed aggression.
